“Where there is ruin, there is hope for a treasure.” ~ Rumi
I remember the time I entered my fortieth year – I was in great anticipation and excitement of using my remaining ten years to hit the high point of my life and career. I was a successful coach, loved helping people and felt I had so much more to give. I knew that as my fifties rolled in, my body would start to change, so I was going to make the most of my abundant health! My intention was to get the perfect body, get more visible, reach my full potential, hit my peak, and that would be my pension and retirement sorted. So off I went into the sunset towards my incredible life… but just one year on, at the grand age of 41, I was exhausted, burnout out, and lost interest in doing the work I loved. A very confusing time.
If you’re reading this, no doubt you’re at a time in your life where things feel like they’ve turned on their head. I’m not sure about you, but I would often wonder if I missed the memo because “flourish in your forties” or “forties fit and fabulous” seem to be the cliched terms I read about as we entered this prime time. Not for me, and not for many women who come to me feeling burnt out, stressed and crying at wildlife documentaries.
Mid-Life Crisis (or Metamorphosis)
During our forties and fifties, we may feel a deep need to purge, or an uncontrollable desire to break free from relationships, routines, work – or do something radical like sell your house on Market Place and travel with your cat. As if that isn’t enough, for many women perimenopause and hormonal fluctuations begin to creep in and these fluctuations can affect our mindset in monumental ways, often leading us on the wrong path. But despite all this chaos hitting us like a train, there’s a silver lining to this great reset, and even though it can feel bloody scary, it does take us on to better things. A more authentic, resilient and aligned version of ourselves full of wisdom and knowledge. We emerge lighter and give less f*cks about what people think. So here’s a reminder; you are a beacon of light, you have a contribution to make and you are needed for your unique gifts – this time will pass and you can feel better with the right support.
