Feeling Not Good Enough (even though you’re amazing!)
Have you ever found yourself achieving something, a job, a compliment, a milestone, and instead of feeling proud or fulfilled, something inside you just… shrinks? Like you’re waiting for someone to say you don’t really belong, that you’ve somehow fooled everyone, or that you need to prove yourself all over again?
Our “not feeling good enough” beliefs are deeply conditioned patterns that can take us away from our truth and integrity; they lead us to the wrong relationships, friendships, into addictions and habits. This self-doubt can also pop up in the most irrational ways in service to others or in our career. Often called imposter syndrome, a feeling that somehow we’re out of our depth, or not deserving of something. This isn’t just related to work or status, it can show up in relationships, friendships, creativity, even parenting. It’s a quiet hum buried underneath so many day-to-day moments, convincing you that you should be more, do more, or have more in order to feel truly valid.
For much of my younger years, I struggled with self-doubt. As a sensitive empath, I became a classic rescuer, always trying to please, seeking validation, and losing sight of my own needs. That pattern eventually led me into a deeply dysfunctional relationship with a narcissistic partner who slowly eroded my confidence and self-worth. It was one of the most painful and defining experiences of my life, but also one of the most transformative as I built myself back up into a stronger, more resilient person.
Feeling like you’re not good enough doesn’t mean it’s true. It means your mind has learned to look for evidence that confirms the inner doubt, while dismissing all the reasons you are worthy, capable, and whole. And if that’s what you’ve been carrying around, you’re definitely not alone.
Below I share three powerful shifts that can help change this inner story. These aren’t big, life-overhauling moves, they’re simple habits that gently bring you back to yourself and start building the kind of inner trust that no title, approval or achievement can ever offer.

1. Make Time to Take Stock and Celebrate Yourself
When we’re constantly striving, always moving on to the next thing, we forget to pause and notice what we’ve actually done. Not just what we’ve achieved, but what we’ve navigated, overcome, chosen, let go of.
So often, people who feel “not good enough” are actually doing far more than they give themselves credit for. But because they’re used to focusing on what still needs fixing or finishing, they bypass their own growth entirely.
Try this, carve out just ten minutes once a week to look back. Ask yourself,
– What have I handled well recently?
– What qualities have I shown that I’m proud of?
– Where have I grown, even if no one else noticed?
Take a moment to feel the energy from these questions. Let the quiet voices of your mind land. That small moment of internal celebration can begin to shift the deep-rooted belief that you’re not enough. Because self-worth isn’t built from doing more, it’s built from recognising what’s already there.
This is one of my favourite tips and I did this myself just this week as I was finally able to celebrate publishing my long awaited book on Amazon. In the past few months I have been practicing daily meditation and during those meditations I take time to acknowledge personal mile stones or things that I feel proud of. Writing and designing this particular book took a lot of time as I wrote and designed every single page, so what seemed like a good idea at the time, was a massive project in the end! I’m sure you have felt that same feeling when you’ve completed a monumental project – a sense of achievement, but perhaps it gets drowned as you move on to the next thing. If this sounds familiar, I really encourage you to take time to completely immerse yourself in pride, acknowledgement and compassion each time you finish something of importance. AND even the small wins too!
2. Catch the Inner Critic and Speak With Compassion
One of the most exhausting things about not feeling good enough is that it rarely comes from other people. It comes from the voice inside your head, the one that says you should be further along, or that you’re on the back foot, or that you didn’t quite get it right.
That voice can be very loud, but it’s not necessarily true.
It’s often an old survival voice, shaped by experiences from the past, trying to keep you safe by criticising you before anyone else can. Which is why it can be so hard to shake off, even when life on the outside looks fine.
So next time you notice that inner critic chiming in, pause and ask,
– What would I say to a friend who felt this way?
– How can I speak to myself with more kindness here?
– What do I actually need in this moment?
Self-talk is so very powerful. It’s the background noise that needs training as it creates the emotional lens you live through. And when you soften the voice inside, everything outside starts to feel less harsh too.
3. Give Without Earning, Say Yes Without Obligation
There’s a quiet pressure that so many of us carry, the idea that we need to earn our worth through what we give. Whether it’s time, energy, care, or performance, we often feel like our value is measured by how useful or agreeable we are to others. But giving out of obligation isn’t generosity, it’s prioritising other people’s needs over your own. And over time, it feeds the belief that you only matter when you’re doing something.
Instead, try giving from a place of choice, not guilt. Say yes when it feels good, not when you feel like you should do something or be somewhere. Let yourself rest, decompress, pull back when needed, not because you have to justify it, but because you deserve to be aligned with your own needs.
When you do give your time, attention, love, let it be authentic, not transactional. No strings. No invisible expectation that it buys you approval. That kind of giving feels nourishing, not depleting. It reminds you that your value isn’t conditional. It’s already there and you are amazing.
